Child Safety Standards

Tribes is committed to providing a safe environment for all users. We do not tolerate any form of child sexual abuse or exploitation (CSAE) on our platform. This policy outlines our standards, safeguards, and response procedures.

1. Our Position

Tribes has zero tolerance for any content or behavior involving the sexual exploitation or abuse of minors. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Child sexual abuse material (CSAM)
  • Sexual harassment or grooming of minors
  • Any content that sexualizes minors
  • Soliciting sexual material from minors
  • Any attempt to contact minors for exploitative purposes

2. Age Requirements

Tribes is intended for users aged 18 and older. We apply the following age-related measures:

  • Age gate: Before using the app, every user must provide their date of birth. Anyone who reports being under 18 is blocked from proceeding.
  • Self-reported verification: Age is based on the date of birth declared by the user; we do not conduct documentary identity verification.
  • Account deletion: Accounts identified as belonging to users under 18 are deleted together with all associated data.

3. Safeguards

We implement multiple layers of protection to help keep younger users safe:

3.1 Message Request System

Direct messages from unfamiliar users require the recipient's approval before a conversation can begin. This prevents unwanted contact and gives users control over who can communicate with them.

3.2 Visibility Controls

  • Users can disable their visibility in search
  • Users can disable their visibility on the map
  • Profile privacy controls let users restrict who can find them

3.3 Blocking System

Users can block any other user at any time. Blocked users cannot send messages, view profiles, or interact with the person who blocked them.

3.4 Reporting System

We provide accessible reporting tools for flagging inappropriate content or behavior:

  • Report an individual user
  • Report a specific message
  • Reporting categories include inappropriate content, spam, harassment, hate speech, and other concerns

4. Content Moderation

  • Admin dashboard: Our team has access to a dedicated dashboard for reviewing reports, managing content, and taking action against users who violate our standards
  • Report review: Every user report is reviewed and appropriate action is taken
  • File filtering: Only image and video files may be uploaded, with a 30 MB size limit to reduce the risk of malicious content
  • In-app calls: Calls take place within the app, participants are identified only by their Tribes names, and we record who starts and joins each call.

5. Response Procedures

When we detect or receive a report of potential CSAE:

  • Immediate action: Violating accounts are immediately suspended or deleted
  • Content removal: All violating content is immediately removed from our servers
  • Reporting to authorities: Where applicable, we report the incident to the relevant authorities, including the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC)
  • Evidence preservation: We preserve relevant information as required by law for law-enforcement investigations
  • Cooperation: We fully cooperate with law-enforcement agencies and child-protection organizations

6. Children's Data and Privacy

  • We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 18
  • If we discover that a child under 18 has created an account, we immediately delete the account and all associated data
  • We comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and applicable data-protection laws

If you encounter any content or behavior on Tribes involving the exploitation or abuse of minors, please take action immediately:

We regularly review and update our child safety standards to ensure that they reflect current industry best practices and legal requirements. Changes will be published on this page with the corresponding update date.
